Construction to begin on North Dakota Guard Maintenance Facility in Valley CityThe Valley City-based 231st Brigade Support Battalion (231st BSB) now will have a new home to provide maintenance support for its inventory of combat and tactical vehicles. North Dakota National Guard leaders along with elected officials today broke ground for a new vehicle maintenance shop and unheated enclosed vehicle storage facility to support unit maintenance operations and training. The $12 million project is expected to be complete by July 2017.

National Guard empowers local youth to tackle fear, strengthen resolveFacing one’s greatest fears can be a daunting challenge for any adult, but for one 10-year-old, the fear of heights had her paralyzed atop a 60-foot tower. Secured with a climbing harness, belay man below, rappel master above, and more than 20 fellow campers cheering her on, Alanna Abeita attempted to step over the edge four times. Each time she tried for more than fifteen minutes to will her right foot to step off the pole onto the vertical wall. Each time she physically could not take that step.

Facing cancer by leaning on Army Values, resilience
In February of 2007 shortly after President Bush announced “The Surge” in Iraq, Lt. Col. Robert Karnes started a life-and-death struggle of his own here in America. Karnes, a 28th Infantry Division and Pennsylvania Army National Guard soldier, just returned from training troops at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and was diagnosed with two different cancers.
