    SCRIPT

September is Suicide Awareness month; the month is dedicated to informing and reinforcing what to do and how to interact with someone contemplating suicide. Col. Lance Varney, the USAG Garrison Commander, says that suicide affects not only the service members but the entire community.

"We need to think about suicide awareness and prevention from a holistic perspective. Within our communities we have Soldiers, civilians, retirees, our dependents, this is a problem that set that spands all of us. It's important that every year we go through and remember truly the criticallity of what this does for our communities, and for our force, and for our readiness and kind of re-glue ourselves in what we should do, what we should know, what we should look for and how much we should truly care about this."

Speaking to someone who may be contemplating suicide can be difficult. Some people find it hard to ask their friend and loved one the tough question, are you thinking about killing yourself? Col. Varney says while it may be hard to ask the question, it is the biggest part of caring for one another.

"I think that first step, it's a tough step for some. We know that those closest to the individual that's having the hard time or contemplating suicide know them the best. I think that first step of asking that direct hard question, alot of folks have problems with it but I think it's the most important. You know I truly think the biggest part of caring for each other is having enough courage to ask that question."
