DVIDS Training Chief / Marine Liaison
Sergeant Scott Michael Schmidt was born June 11, 1987, in Milwaukee, WI, and graduated from Alexander W. Dreyfoos Jr. School of the Arts in 2006. Schmidt shipped to recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in July 2006 at the age of 19.
Pvt. Schmidt graduated recruit training Oct. 20, 2006 and preceded to Marine Corps Combat Training aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C. Pvt. Schmidt reported to the Defense Information School’s Basic Public Affairs Writer’s Course at Fort Meade, Md., in November 2006 for the Combat Correspondent MOS (4341).
Lance Cpl. Schmidt graduated from the Basic Public Affairs – Writers Course in April 2007 and remained at DINFOS for the Basic Public Affairs – Broadcast course, until he graduated in October 2007. Equipped with both a writer and broadcast MOS, LCpl. Schmidt reported to the 2nd Marine Division’s Public Affairs Office at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. He was shortly after attached to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment as the sole correspondent for the battalion. LCpl. Schmidt spent 17 month with the infantry battalion including an 8-month deployment to Habbaniyah and Sal Sinjar, Iraq in 2008.
Cpl. Schmidt returned from Iraq and filled the role as 2nd Marine Division’s press chief until he was transferred to the Defense Media Activity -Marine Corps Element in Arlington, Va., in May 2009. Cpl. Schmidt attended the Intermediate Photojournalism Course at DINFOS in 2010 and graduated as the distinguished honor graduate. As a correspondent for Marines Magazine and a social media analyst for HQMC’s initial social media planning efforts, Cpl. Schmidt deployed to Mozambique, Africa in 2010 for 40 days in support of Marine Forces Africa’s ongoing humanitarian operations in the country. Cpl. Schmidt was also named the Marine Corps’ Photographer of the Year for 2010 as well as the Department of Defense’s Photojournalist of the Year in Multimedia Production.
In April 2011, Sgt. Schmidt was transferred to Recruiting Station Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as the Marketing and Public Affairs Chief for South Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2012, Sgt. Schmidt attended the Intermediate Public Affairs Supervisors course at DINFOS and graduated in the top 10% of his class. Sgt. Schmidt was named the Marine Corps Recruiting Command’s Marketing and Public Affairs Marine of the year for FY 2013.
Sgt. Schmidt currently serves as the Marine Corps Liaison and Training Chief at Defense Video and Imagery Distribution System (DVIDS) in Atlanta, Ga.
Schmidt’s personal and professional awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and the Marine Corp Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Star in lieu of Second award.
