KABUL, Afghanistan – Joint Afghan-international security forces conducted operations against insurgents in Ghazni and Paktiya provinces last night, discovered opium in Helmand province yesterday, and discovered a large weapons cache in Badghis province Thursday.
An Afghan-international security force detained two suspected insurgents in Ghazni province this morning while pursuing a Taliban commander who is responsible for smuggling Pakistani, Chechen and Arab fighters and improvised explosive device materials into Shah Joy District from Pakistan.
The Afghan-led search focused on a compound in the village of Purdel in Gelan District, Ghazni province. The combined security force was engaged with sporadic and ineffective gunfire from several directions during the search.
After initial questioning of residents, the combined security force detained the suspected insurgents. There was no damage to any of the buildings, and women and children were protected by the security force.
A separate Afghan-international security force killed an armed individual and detained several suspected insurgents in Paktiya province last night.
The security force went to a series of compounds in Ahmadabad District, and Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to peacefully exit the buildings. After no response was observed, the security force illuminated the residence from an overhead aircraft to alert them of coalition force presence. An armed individual attempted to engage the combined force, and the security force shot and killed him in self-defense. The team recovered a number of weapons in the compound.
After receiving a tip from an area resident, ANSF and ISAF forces discovered a weapons cache consisting of 178 82mm mortar grenades in Muqor, Badghis province, Thursday.
According to ISAF IED experts, the explosives in the shells could be used to make several dozen large IED's.
The cache was moved to a safe location and will be destroyed.
An Afghan-international patrol discovered approximately 100 kilograms of opium and IED-making material to include home-made explosive mixing containers, wiring and batteries in Nawah-ye Barakzai District, Helmand province, yesterday. All items were safely destroyed on site.
