KABUL, Afghanistan — A joint Afghan and international security force killed a large number of enemy militants and destroyed a complex of bunkers, weapons and other structures in Paktika province, Aug. 28, that was used by the Haqqani Network as a logistics base and safe haven for foreign fighters operating in the region.

The joint force conducted the operation in the remote location in the mountains of Urgun District on the eastern side of the province. The force was engaged by small arms fire from hostile militants on several different occasions in an operation that lasted close to 24 hours.

The force used direct fire and close air support to repel the attacks from militants. By the end of the operation, the force killed a large number of hostile militants and recovered multiple antiaircraft artillery pieces, two heavy machine guns, two light machine guns, several assault rifles, multiple chest racks, ammunition, and communications gear. The force destroyed the bunker complex and all enemy weaponry in place.

There were no civilian casualties reported during the operation.

Afghan and international security forces continue to work together to destroy the Haqqani militant network, eliminate Muslim against Muslim violence and allow the Afghan people to live their lives free from terrorism caused by insurgents.

ISAF is a key component of the international community's engagement in Afghanistan, assisting the Afghan authorities in providing security and stability and creating the conditions for reconstruction and development.
