BAGHDAD – In the past year, a number of schools across Iraq were renovated by Iraqi and coalition forces. For one specific neighborhood and its children, the grand opening of the al-Hurriyah School, which was built from the ground up, is a sign that the government of Iraq is placing its high value on educating the youth.

The Jan. 15 grand opening was attended by members of the Iraqi ministry of education, Hurriyah Neighborhood Council, Iraqi Soldiers form the 1st Battalion, 22nd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers from the 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

"The new al-Hurriyah School is standing as a new standard in education for the people of Hurriyah," said Maj. Mark Warden, operations officer, 1st Bn. 18th Inf. Regt., 2nd HBCT.

In addition to building a new school from the ground up, a playground was installed in the school yard, which will provide the school children a place to spend quality time.

"The al-Hurriyah School stands as a jewel in the crown of the ministry of education," said Staff Sgt. Anthony Miller, attached to the 1st Bn., 18th Inf. Regt., 2nd HBCT. "Hurriyah is standing at the dawn of a new day."

With the improved security in the area, local children are able to take advantage of a thriving environment, which provides them the opportunity to move freely to and from school. The future of Iraqi education improves with each new school opening.
