>> finally tonight, honors for a man who had been too modest to receive thanks for his role on that day so many young americans made a daring landing in the fight for freedom. june 6th, 1944. 73,000 american forces descending on the beaches of normandy, d-day. >> jumping out the door in the dark, with all that nonsense was going on. all the training was worth it and we were ready. >> reporter: 21-year-old army sergeant robert bearden, clutching a rifle, jumped out of a plane, was shot and then wounded by a grenade, but he kept fighting for four days before being captured by enemy forces. and once home, sergeant bearden never applied for his medals, because it was country, not being commended, that mattered to him. >> we knew he served. we knew what he did. and just wasn't a big part of life. >> reporter: he did write a modest memoir. and strangers who read it start add letter writing campaign. finally, 13 medals were pinned to robert bearden's chest, including the purple heart. a grateful nation remembering all the young american boys who leapt into the unknown 66 years ago. >> a definition of a hero, as a combat solider who's getting shot that doesn't run they're all heroes. >> and 13 medals, 66 years later. >>> have a great night, we'll see you right back here tomorrow.
