When the Tampa Bay Lightning needs a vocalist, they call Tech. Sgt. Sonya Bryson. Emotions ran high as Tech. Sgt. Bryson delivered her one-thousandth performance of the national anthem.
Tech. Sgt. Bryson: I go into a zone, it’s almost like everything is blocked out.
I try to be mentally just connected to what I’m about to do.
I’m Tech. Sgt. Sonya Bryson, I work in the 6th maintenance group as the NCOIC of maintenance scheduling, and I am also a singer.
Because it’s such a special song to me, it always has been, I’m actually in the words I’m in everything that’s going on in that event. When you’re thinking about the anthem you’re thinking about battle. You’re thinking about all the things that have happened underneath the flag so all that stuff is going through my head. Actually in the part where it says the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, that actually gets me emotional. It’s a choke-up point, but I have to push past that.
My very best anthem was the first one that I did for the Tampa Bay Lightning. I’m used to the quiet protocol for anthems, and ceremonies so I guess that the quietness of a ceremony and then going to a hockey game and hearing that thunderous applause and also response from the anthem was very very meaningful to me.
