The Department of Defense announced in late September that elements of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Headquarters, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, will deploy to Monrovia, Liberia, as part of the Joint Force Command for Operation United Assistance, the Department of Defense’s effort to assist in the fight against the Ebola Virus epidemic in Western Africa. The 101st, along with other units from across the U.S. Army will provide medical and logistic support, as well as site security, to the Joint Task Force. SSG Jonathan Norris tells us that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel stopped by Fort Campbell to see the preparations for this mission, and to thank Soldiers for bringing some very unique skill sets to the operation.

The total Army commitment to Operation United Assistance is approximately 3,200 Soldiers. Beyond Fort Campbell, units from Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Carson, Colo.; Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Bragg, N.C., Fort Stewart, Ga., Fort Benning, Ga., Fort Eustis, Va., and Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., will join the U.S. Army response as part of Operation United Assistance.
