Video by Airman 1st Class Devin Nothstine

    AFN Pacific

Imagine playing the classic game “minesweeper” in real life. The USS warrior does, and there are no second chances if mistakes are made. Airman First Class Devin Nothstine tells us more.
    Suggested tag:
The navy and marine corps medal is the second highest non-combat decoration awarded for heroism and hinges on the actual level of personal "life threatening" risk experienced by the awardee.

    Sb:
My job is basically to train other sailors on how to properly combat any type of casualty could either be in fire, flooding, or structural damage.
    Narrator:
He loves what he does because he makes a difference.
    Sb:
Back in boot camp people tell you you’re never going to be super noticed or you’ll get a medal or award, nothing like that. But this was a real life deal right here.
    Narrator:
As a damage controlman he is basically responsible for anything that could go wrong on this ship, mine counter measures ship 10 or the USS Warrior. On the warrior, Isidore is known as a war hero.
    Sb:
On the USS Guardian we ran aground so i was in some damage control efforts and therefore i received a navy marine corps medal. It’s the highest non combatant medal you can receive
    Narrator:
His last ship, the USS Guardian, hit a reef and water flooded into the bilge.
    Sb:
Yeah it was scary. I mean it was three or four feet of water and equipment was still online so therefore you got water rolling around in the bilge. You have the switchboards so at any given time it could have went bad. Thank god everything was good, everyone came out alive from that.
    Narrator:
Tools are available on board to assist in survival, but Isidore’s fellow sailor motivated him the most to act as a savior.
    Sb:
He had a wife and kid and i see him down there doing what he had to do so that gave me motivation. Hey if he has a wife and kid I might as well just help him out. If you see other leaders doing what they are supposed to do that’s motivation for the young guys.
