Seven personnel from 16 Field Regiment are embedded with elements of 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (5 ANGLICO), United States Marine Corps, normally based in Okinawa. The Kiwis are obtaining their Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) qualifications and are broken up amongst various Firepower Control Teams operations, and in this training scenario at Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island, the Kiwis were directing F/A-18 Hornets, an UH-1 Iroquois gunship and AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter in a live fire exercise. Twenty-two nations, 49 ships and six submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 26 to August 1, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans.
