Members of Hawaii’s Army and Air National Guard took some time on the 4th of July to join in on a friendly military competition. They participated in the military outrigger canoe race during the Duke Kahanumoku regatta on Waikiki beach against teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. Outrigger canoe paddling is a sport in Hawaii that has deep cultural and historical significance, being the mode of transportation between islands, for fishermen and warriors alike for the native people of the Hawaiian Islands. The goal of the competition is to win but a significant benefit is building relationships with their active duty brothers-in-arms. Available in high definition.
