Video by Master Sgt. Vincent De Groot

185th Air Refueling Wing, Iowa Air National Guard

B-roll of an Airman from the Iowa Air Guard was recently awarded the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for his involvement in Special Olympics. Master Sgt. Vince De Groot tells us how this Airman’s involvement in Special Olympics recently took him to the world games in South Korean and Olympic Gold.

Master Sergeant Bill Wiseman works as a Public Affairs Specialist in the Iowa Air National Guard. He has a full time civilian job, responsibilities at home and is the father of a special needs child. Wiseman added “Coach” to his resume when he became involved with Special Olympics nearly a decade ago when his youngest son, Christopher, who has Downs Syndrome, was first old enough to participate.

The South Sioux City, Nebraska Special Olympics program where Wiseman has been volunteering offers year-round participation in a variety sports; where right now it is football season.

“it’s actually a fairly quick paced game sometimes we score a lot; sometimes we don’t score at all”
Wiseman is often joined on the field by his oldest son Billy (who also happens to serves as a member of the Army National Guard here in Nebraska). Billy also helps with coaching and plays along-side his brother as a unified partner in sports like floor hockey.

“I coach basketball, I coach little guys for floor hockey, and I’m also a unified partner which means I play alongside along with the athletes, and the great thing is about being the coach is I can help develop the younger kids so they can one day play on the unified team.”
The pinnacle for the Wiseman’s involvement in Special Olympics came earlier this year when they took their Floor Hockey Team to the Special Olympic Winter Games in South Korea and when it was over they took home the Gold.
(Sound bite: That moment was awesome as I got to watch those kids celebrate and to see the elation on their faces. I am lucky because I get to see that look every time one of our athletes score, steal the puck or block a shot, whether it is at the World Games or the State Games or even in practice; they have the same amount of emotion!)
According to Wiseman the athletes play because no matter what the sport they love to play; and he says he is the one who is privileged to be a part of their lives.
Master Sgt. Wiseman’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. It was because of his involvement in Special Olympics that Wiseman was recently awarded the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
In short the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal recognizes members of the military like Master Sgt Wiseman, who perform volunteer service that is above and beyond the duties required as a member of the military.

The description of the awards criteria goes on to say that that the volunteer service must be significant in nature to produce tangible results and while an Olympic Gold Medal is definitely tangible, the real results are found in the camaraderie out here on the field.
