Col. Barry Bort, Chief of Staff, 143d ESC, Orlando, Fl., presents Jesse Hughes, a former POW and Veteran of D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge with medals earned during the European campaign from 1941-1945 in Jacksonville, Fl., on July 13, 2013. Hughes is a resident of Orlando, Fl. He retired after the war to Miami where he worked in the Dade county Parks system for 35 years.

Though he arrived after the chaplain's passing, Canaan immediately heard of CH Kapaun's inspiring acts. Canaan's wife Ruth attended the 12 April 2013 Medal of Honor ceremony at the Pentagon and shared her husband's story.
