The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force hold the opening ceremony for Exercise Iron Fist 2013, a bilateral training event designed to increase interoperability between the two services. During the exercise, members of both services will conduct combined arms training at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., amphibious training on San Clemente Island, Calif., and mechanized training at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Closing ceremonies will be held Feb. 15.
