Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta visits with Soldiers of U.S. Army Europe’s 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team at Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy, Jan. 17. Video by Davide Dalla Massara, Vicenza Photo Lab Panetta led an hour-long town hall meeting with Soldiers of the 173rd ABCT, fielded questions and joined troops for lunch at the South of the Alps Dining Facility. Afterward he continued on to the United Kingdom to conclude his final overseas tour as the nation’s top defense official.

  • During the week of 16-20 September 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) hosted Expert Infantry Badge testing. More than 650 Soldiers from the brigade and surrounding units participated in the event. Throughout the week the physical and mental fortitude of the Soldiers was put to the test. The expertise required to pass the events eliminated the majority of the candidates leaving only 79 Soldiers to receive the Expert Infantry Badge. Soldiers are training on the newly constructed Joint Multinational Training Center MOUT site in Dandolo, Italy. The facility resembles a small village or living compound, and is located in close proximity to important joint training areas presently used by both Italian and U.S. forces.

  • Soldiers of 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 173rd BSB, from Caserma Del Din Vicenza, Italy are conducting live fire range training with the M240B machine gun and with the M4 rifle, under the supervision of their squad leader at Monte Romano January 30, 2014. Monte Romano is the largest Italian Army Training Area on the Italian peninsula and is located about 90 miles Northeast of Roma.
