The Kansas Air National Guard will deploy five medical personnel to New York State to provide support for public health, disease assessment, surveillance, prevention and abatement for Hurricane Sandy recovery operations.

"These airmen are trained, ready and eager to go," said Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, the adjutant general and director of the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. "We are grateful to be in a position to help the people of New York."

Four of the airmen are from the 184th Intelligence Wing, Wichita, and one is from the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Topeka. The airmen will initially deploy to Camp Smith, N.Y., and from there will deploy to temporary forward operating bases within the state. They will depart from Kansas City, Wichita and Omaha, Neb., Nov. 7 and are expected to be deployed for approximately two weeks.

The deployment is arranged through the Kansas Division of Emergency Management under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, a national disaster relief compact that includes all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands that expedites emergency assistance between states and territories.
