Video by Airman 1st Class Cody Griffith and Staff Sgt. Anthony Kuhn

    Nellis Air Force Base

This is the first wounded warrior basketball camp hosted by Nellis Air Force Base. While some of these athletes are playing for fun, others are trying out for a spot in the Paralympics. But this camp provides something for everyone.

SB (Col Mason Pigue) – “It’s an opportunity for our wounded, ill, and injured personnel, our warriors, to have a chance to try and re-assimilate, re-acclimate, and also have a chance to work out. I think it’s just a great program. This is the first opportunity for us to do this as an Air Force, and I can’t think of a better use of our time.”

Basketball is a competitive sport; pitting team against team, but for the participants of this basketball camp, being among fellow wounded warriors transcends all competition.

SB (Gene Don Gatzert II) – “It’s like we’re all brothers and sisters, we fit right in, they’re easier to talk to. This actually helps the, you know, PTSD and just physical therapy part out, just being branched out. The Air Force hasn’t done this in forever, and now they’re coming back strong, so it’s very pleasant.”

For these players, spreading the word about adaptive sports camps to other wounded warriors is just as important as scoring.

SB (Gene Don Gatzert II) –“People who have broken backs, like myself, PTSD, missing arms, missing limbs, you can do any of these sports. It’s not going to stop you.”

SB (Timothy Anderson) –“Now that Nellis is on board, I think that all military bases should be on board. It shouldn’t just be certain bases, there’s veterans and military in all the states and I think that every base should have a program like this.”

Ultimately this wounded warrior basketball camp is not about winners and losers; it is about therapy, friendship, and healing. Air force staff sergeant Anthony Kuhn, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.
