The Navy commissioned the newest San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship during a ceremony May 19, in San Diego, Calif.
The USS San Diego, now part of the U.S. 3rd Fleet, is the first ship in U.S. history to settle at its home port in the city it is named after and is the fourth ship to bear its name.
LPDs are used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked air cushion or conventional landing craft and expeditionary fighting vehicles or amphibious assault vehicles. The ship can support amphibious assault, special operations or expeditionary warfare missions. Also available in high definition
