FORT CHAFFEE MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, Ark. – Members of the Arkansas Army National Guard's 1039th Engineer Company, based in Marked Tree and Harrisburg, are training here this month in preparation for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. The unit, part of the state’s 875th Engineer Battalion, is anticipated to mobilize for additional training this summer prior to deployment overseas later this year. In late 2006, the 875th deployed its entire battalion of over 400 soldiers and were credited with clearing the Iraqi roadways of 1,244 improvised explosive devices (IED). The battalion’s Jonesboro and Paragould based 1037th Engineer Company, deployed again just two years later with the mission to clear the Afghan roadways of that same danger. Those 200 soldiers spent the following nine months logging 40,600 kilometers of roadway and clearing 120 IEDs. Approximately 100 Soldiers strong, the 1039th is now tasked with the same mission.
