Soldiers from across the Commonwealth mobilized for federal active duty June 1 under the command of the Portsmouth-based 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry, 116th Brigade Combat Team with units in Norfolk, Suffolk, Virginia Beach as well as Christiansburg and Fredericksburg. Task Force 183 was the largest single unit mobilization since World War II, and the Soldiers arrived in Iraq in early August 2011 to provide convoy security and based defense support in Iraq. More than 1,100 Virginia National Guard Soldiers returned from duty in Iraq in December with welcome home ceremonies conducted at home armories starting Dec. 8.
