U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District

On July 23, the first pads constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractors were made available to FEMA to place 12 mobile home units for the temporary housing mission. The pads include all the necessary utility hook-ups, such as waterlines, electricity and sewer lines.

FEMA will continue to bring these mobile home units on finished pads, 67 to date, so that they can begin housing people who lost their homes after the May 22 tornado destroyed 1/3 of Joplin. The first pads are located at the Officer Jeff Taylor Memorial Acres site. An adjacent site, Hope Haven, is still under construction, but as pads become available, the Corps and FEMA will continue to work together to place mobile homes to house 346 people or families in need of temporary housing in the area. These sites are just south of the Joplin Regional airport.

FEMA has already housed people on existing mobile home parks, and has identified 624 people or families in need in total.

The FEMA deadline to request assistance is fast approaching. Requests needs to be in by July 29. To request temporary housing assistance, call (800) 621-FEMA (3362).
