The soldiers currently deployed with the 1st Brigade Combat Team come from more than 500 Minnesota communities, but they all have one thing in common. Each Soldier has a family they left behind to serve their country. One Minnesota-based volunteer group has made it their goal to bring Soldiers together with their family for a meal, even though they’re more than 6,000 miles away.

Arriving in Norway on Feb. 9, 2012, at 6:30 a.m. local time, Minnesota National Guard soldiers and airman immediately took part in a flag ceremony that marked the official start of the Norwegian Exchange. After the flag ceremony, Norwegian troops boarded the same plane that the Minnesota Guard members just disembarked. The Norwegian soldiers were to fly to Camp Ripley, Minn. to begin their training in America.

Camp Ripley, Minn. – Earth day activities this year included the release of an injured a Northern Saw Whet owl. The owl had an injured wing, nursed back to health and released today at the tree nursery. The nursery is used to get trees started for transplanting downrange. The soldiers are splitting and chopping wood that is reclaimed from felled trees from inside the range area. The wood is donated to the families of deployed soldiers to offset heating costs.
