The Iowa National Guard redeployed 2,800 2nd Brigade Combat Team soldiers earlier this year from Afghanistan. The BCT performed combat and humanitarian missions while there. Another, much smaller army and air national guard group took on a more grassroots mission away from the BCT, as an agri-business development team. They spent the year fostering relations and exchanging knowledge and ideas on a farmer's level. Cheif of the national guard bureau, Gen. Twenty-four Airmen from the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing are on state active duty, patrolling levees along the Iowa side of the Missouri river. The Airmen are patrolling large levees constructed just a few weeks ago near downtown Sioux City. This week the Army Corps of Engineers began releasing the maximum amount of water possible from the Gavins Point Dam upstream from Sioux City. The Airmen are working shifts in order to patrol the levee 24 hours a day. They are watching for areas in the levee that may begin to weaken and they are insuring the city water wells in the area are kept free from flooding river water. Master Sgt. Ron Hanson is a crew chief with the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, Iowa. He is working as the day shift supervisor on levee patrol.

Iowa National Guard soldiers from central Iowa have been placed on state active duty to assist local and state authorities in the western Iowa town of Sioux City, Iowa and North Sioux City, South Dakota. Guardsmen from the Iowa National Guard are working with their counter parts from the South Dakota National Guard to protect private properties and municipalities along the swollen Missouri River. Flight Crews from Charlie Company - 2nd of the 147th Aviation battalion, Iowa Army National Guard from Boone, Iowa are sling loading large sand bags with their UH-60 Helicopters. Sergeant John Vorrath is a crew chief with C- Company. He is from Ames Iowa.
