State Sends Additional Aid to Doniphan CountryState Sends Additional Aid to Doniphan Country
Twenty-four soldiers from the Kansas National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery have deployed to Doniphan County to augment security patrols and assist in evacuations, if needed. The tasking came through the Kansas Division of Emergency Management at the request of the mayor of Elwood and county emergency management officials. These soldiers are in addition to the 10 that have been on duty in Doniphan County since early June to patrol levees and assess their condition. “These Guardsmen will be available as a support resource for emergency responders in Doniphan County,” said Maj. Gen. (KS) Lee Tafanelli, the adjutant general and director of the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. An estimated 400 residents have voluntarily left Elwood as a precaution. The public is reminded that, if they need to evacuate their homes, to do so as early as possible and take all essential items with them, including family records, medications, pets and other valuables. Once you have relocated, it is unlikely you will be able to return to your home to retrieve items for an extended period of time. The State Emergency Operations Center is being staffed on a 16-hour basis with support from key Emergency Support Function agencies. A duty officer will remain on duty overnight to maintain contact with local emergency managers. If conditions warrant, the EOC will be staffed on a 24-hour basis. “We are constantly assessing the situation and the necessary level of response,” said Tafanelli. “If we need to bring in more people to provide coverage of emergency support functions in the EOC, then we will do it.”

He was returning from a fishing trip with his son when he saw the tornado rip through the town. His wife and youngest daughter survived the tornado by taking refuge in the home’s master bathroom – the only room that remained after the tornado.

Expedition ImpossibleExpedition Impossible
Capt. Aaron Isaacson was asked to participate in Expedition Impossible after completing a mountain climb in Nepal with a group of wounded warriors. His teammates for the show were the organizers of the climb and recognized Isaacson's work ethic and wanted to include him in the reality show. An interesting point is that one of his teammates is blind which, to some, would look like a disadvantage, but Isaacson felt his teammate was more than capable of being a strong competitor. Produced by Senior Airman Matthew Lucht.
