Marine Role Model
Young men and women from all over have been attracted to the Marine Corps as a career because of the discipline, adventure and variety it offers. Many self-proclaimed ‘bad boys’ who have wanted to change their ways before they went too far down the wrong path have sought the Marine Corps and many have been transformed because of this decision. Happier as a Marine “I received a package in the mail (calling me back to active duty) and then the a gunnery sergeant called the next day, because I guess they send it out one day,” said a Guadalupe, Ariz., native. “Originally, I thought it was a joke because I used to play around with people all the time the same way. But, they called me and sure enough they said, ‘Hey we need you back.’ They gave me a month’s time to show up to a muster. (12/8/07)
South Bend, Ind native serves as POET
As the security continues to improve, the government of Iraq is taking more responsibility for providing its own security. Transition teams from the U.S. military are forming to guide the Iraqi military, police, border agents and port of entry personnel into accomplishing this goal. For one South Bend, Ind., Marine, daily duties include training the Iraqis to identify people who are crossing into Iraq from Syria.

Waller, Texas, Native Trades in One Uniform for Another
This time last year, 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Michael Mathes was working for the local sheriff and fire departments in Waller, Texas. It was his duty to serve the people of his small community, protecting them from dangerous situations and providing a safer environment for everyone. These days, Mathes walks down the streets of a different neighborhood and in a different uniform, but his basic duty hasn’t changed. For the next several months, he will be responsible for the welfare of Iraqi civilians living in Haditha and his brothers-in-arms, as he proudly serves as an infantryman with 3rd squad, 1st platoon, Company L. Miami sailor joins fight in Haditha
Sailors with Riverine Squadron 2, based out of Little Creek, Va., recently took over the mission of securing the waterways near the Haditha Triad in Iraq. With them, they brought a sailor originally from Nicaragua who wanted to help people from another impoverished nation attain freedom and stability.
