Afghan leaders host reintegration shura in Gizab05/20/2012 Story by Petty Officer 3rd Class James Ginther
URUZGAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Several Afghan political figures held a reintegration shura with local village elders at the Gizab district center, May 20.
The reintegration shura, which was hosted as a call for peace and lifestyle improvement, allowed villagers to publicly voice their concerns and presented an opportunity to pledge their commitment to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
The shura, which was attended by 200 local elders, included speeches from many prominent political figures, said a coalition representative. The leaders who hosted the shura included Uruzgan’s Provincial Gov. Amir Mohammad Akhundzada; the District Gov. Haji Abdullah; the Provincial Chief of Police Brig. Gen. Matiullah Khan; the District Chief of Police Agha Lalai and the provincial ministerial directors of Health, Development and Education.
“Akhundzada called for a stop to the fighting so that all of the people of Afghanistan can work together toward modernizing their country,” said the coalition representative. “He said if the violence doesn’t stop, then the only outcome is that more people will die including women and children.”
“Akhundzada praised the Gizab district for its successes in security, calling the area a model of achievement for other districts,” said the coalition member. Akhundzada said he was committed to bringing development to the district, including a hospital and a bridge over the Helmand River.
Several speakers addressed topics including reconciliation and reintegration and voiced concerns over topics of tribal differences and how they may lead to violence, said the coalition representative. Some frustrated village elders demanded equal rights, but admitted they were looking forward to further discussions on the subject. |
