News Stories California's Homeland Response Force security element protects first responders The bus was loaded full of military policemen clad in white hazmat suits and gas masks hanging by their sides. No one spoke. Their faces were strained with worry, apprehension and for some, excitement. The shout went out, “Gas, gas, gas!” by their leader. Rustling and snapping of rubber straps being adjusted was all you heard as the soldiers quickly donned their protective masks. Breathing heavily they rushed off the bus in a controlled, hurried manner. 11.4.11 Story by Sgt. Salli Curchin

Infantry Squad Battle Course raises the bar on realism and tests troops’ mettle Sounds of Adhan (Islamic call to prayer) echo off the canyon walls. The hot, arid wind brings with it dust and feelings of nervous anticipation from the soldiers of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 160th Infantry Regiment, as they approach a bunker dug into a hillside. The cracking of an AK-47 machine gun breaks the silence. Nearly 100 meters from where the California Army National Guard infantrymen are advancing, a man in a gun-mounted truck facing the troops also opens fire. The men take cover, return fire and begin a coordinated counterattack. Within minutes, the opposing forces threat is eliminated. 10.17.11 Story by Sgt. Aaron Ricca

Sure citizen Soldiers or Airmen are still required to conduct roughly 16 hours of training a month and attend a two-week annual exercise but the majority of the men and women in uniform go above and beyond. 09.17.11 Story by Sgt. Salli Curchin
California National Guard soldiers competing for the title of 2011 Best Warrior get support from their fellow warrior For six grueling days in September, nine soldiers competing for the title of Best Warrior navigated their way across the hills of San Luis Obispo, Calif., climbed up ropes, under barbed wire and over walls, took down enemies and racked their brains for answers, all with little time to rest. But these competitors didn’t go it alone. Behind each warrior was a dedicated sponsor ensuring all their needs were taken care of and cheering them on from the sidelines. 09.17.11 Story by Staff Sgt. Emily Suhr
