News Stories The 81st Heavy Brigade Combat Team heads home
During a ceremony held on Camp Ramadi, Iraq, July 13, Col. Ronald M. Kapral and Command Sgt. Maj. Robert J. Sweeney rolled up the 81st Heavy Brigade Combat Team colors and once again placed them in a protective case, a military tradition, signaling the brigade's return to the U.S. nearly nine months after arriving in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

 Corporal exemplifies 'Year of the Non-commissioned Officer'
Cpl. Adam Cross fulfilled his military obligation and received an honorable discharge from the New York Army National Guard in January 2008. After learning his good friend Spc. Christopher Vanbrenk was deploying to Iraq with the 81st Brigade Combat Team, cross enlisted in the Washington Army National Guard with the specific intent of joining his friend on a 12-month mobilization to Iraq.

A big move made easy at Abu Ghraib
The commander of 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company Crazy Horse, 1-161st Infantry (Combined Arms Battalion), 81st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Lt. Joel Berkowitz, never would have imagined himself leading a convoy through downtown Baghdad with $6 million worth of industrial generators under his responsibility and the success of the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command's mission at Camp Taji, Iraq, depending on his efforts.
