The XVIII Airborne Corps commanding general and command sergeant major, Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick and Command Sgt. Maj. Earl Rice, subordinate division commanders and more than 100 distinguished guests attended the XVIII Abn. Corps’ Welcome Home Retreat Ceremony, a conclusion to a week-long series of celebratory events, on Fort Bragg Feb. 2.

Hundreds of Green Berets volunteered for the mission. But after months of preparation on Nov. 20, 1970, only 56 of them used the cover of darkness to infiltrate the North Vietnamese prison camp of Son Tay in an attempt to rescue 70 American prisoners of war more than 100 miles behind enemy lines. The raid was a tactical success, neutralizing hundreds of North Vietnamese soldiers with only two minor injuries received by American forces.


Two green berets receive Silver Stars
Hundreds of green berets gathered in the John F. Kennedy auditorium Wednesday to honor two of their own. Staff Sgt. Linsey Clarke, who serves as a medical sergeant, for Operational Detachment Alpha 3123, Company B, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) and Master Sgt. Anthony Siriwardene, an operations sergeant of Operational Detachment Alpha 3236, Company C, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) were each awarded the Silver Star for acts of valor during battles in Afghanistan.

The Highlands chapter of the American Red Cross held the third annual Run for the Red, Saturday, in downtown Fayetteville.


Fort Bragg kitchen cooks up awards
In this year's Installation Management Agency level Phillip A. Connelly Award competition, two Fort Bragg Dining Facilities claimed victory and are now competing at the Department of the Army level for the title of Army's Best Dining Facility.
