After two days of exams and warrior tasks during a brigade level soldier of the Year board, the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade is proud to announce Spc. Clifton F. Adams III as the Soldier of the Year and Staff Sgt. Miguel Diego-Mendez as the Non-commissioned Officer of the Year.

Two officers with the Royal Moroccan army visited the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade during a multi-site tour of the South Carolina National Guard July 13.


SC Guard trains to respond to terrorist attack
Nearly 1,600 South Carolina Army National Guard soldiers from the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, headquartered in Charleston S.C., are conducting a training exercise in the cities of McCormick, Barnwell and Plum Branch, S.C. The exercise centers around a simulated nuclear terrorist attack on U.S. soil. The exercise, named Palmetto Response, is two weeks long and began the first week of June.

“Crouch. Touch. Pause. Engage!” yells the referee, just before the scrum begins to push and turn. The brawny rugby players are bound together in a close-knit huddle of black and white jerseys against green and orange. With arms interlocking around the shoulders or legs of each teammate, the men hold on to anything they can to gain leverage against their opponent.

Black soldiers have served and defended South Carolina for more than 300 years. They have sweat, bled, and died in defense of their state.
