The Iraqi Department of Border Enforcement, the Government of Iraq's primary force for border security and the interdiction of smuggling, continues to keep an eye on the border with Iran.
Though the U.S. has been building up the civilian infrastructure of Iraq since 2003, the sense of ownership and level interest of the people has never been as great as it is now, and that makes all the difference.
As U.S. forces continue to assume more of a supporting role in Iraq, the Iraqi Department of Border Enforcement is assuming greater responsibility for retaining security and safety along the border with Iran.
