The Alabama Army National Guard’s 167th Theater Sustainment Command, Fort McClellan, Ala., deployed approximately 60 soldiers here in support of Operation Vibrant Response 12.1. VR12.1 is a national exercise designed to test the preparedness of various federal, state and local emergency responders. The exercise provides the best training to these “first responders” in the event of a national emergency.

TaMarcus Pruitt’s Social Study 6 class at Hillcrest Middle School in Tuscaloosa, Ala., learned what it means to be Always Ready Always There. National Guardsmen 1st Lt. Cortez Fabia and 1st Lt. (P) Joseph Sparks, 131st Cavalry from Enterprise, Ala., were giving back to an extremely supportive community.

Pallets stacked high with cases of water, bags of ice, boxes of Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) and tarps await distribution in the Legion Field parking lot located in Birmingham, Ala. This is the Alabama National Guard’s distribution center for Task Force Jefferson, the mission to assist citizens of Jefferson County affected by the April 27 tornado. Guardsmen are also assisting local law enforcement with traffic control and neighborhood security.


Alabama National Guardsmen help keep neighborhoods safe
One Tuscaloosa Police officer. Two columns of Guardsmen. Three Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control agents. This is one of many groups that are seen patrolling the streets of Tuscaloosa throughout the night. They work together to secure the areas designated as recovery zones that were destroyed during the April 27 tornados. The groups are patrolling to make sure there is no theft, robbery or criminal trespassing.

Alabama National Guard soldiers responded quickly and proficiently in response to Governor Robert Bentley’s mobilization of the Alabama National Guard this week. The Guardsmen were mobilized to provide emergency assistance to areas of Alabama that were affected by the tornado Wednesday. Tuscaloosa, Ala., is one of the hardest hit areas in the state, and soldiers from the 31st Chemical Brigade in Northport, Ala., are some of the troops assisting with the cleanup.
