Marines from Company A, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, conducted a night helocast off the shore of Red Beach during a night helocast training exercise, Feb. 1. The Marines trained alongside Japanese Rangers from the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force as part of Exercise Iron Fist 2012, a bilateral training exercise between the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the JGSDF.

Marines and Japanese soldiers conducted helo-dunking egress training, simulated casualty drills and abandon ship techniques from a 10-meter platform during Exercise Iron Fist 2012, at the Camp Horno pool, Jan 28. Iron Fist is a bi-lateral training exercise between the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force. Both nations were preparing for the helocasting exercises the following week, which trains service members to jump from a helicopter into a body of water.

Marines with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and Japanese soldiers with the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force practiced helocasting at the Red Beach training area, Jan. 30. The event was a part of Exercise Iron Fist 2012, a bilateral training event with the Japanese, designed to increase interoperability between the two services. The purpose of helo casting is to insert troops over the horizon and have them come ashore to conduct reconnaissance missions.

Soldiers with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force participated in a combined arms training exercise on Camp Pendleton, Jan. 24 through Feb. 1. The training was planned in a crawl, walk, run format, designed to build confidence in the soldiers' with their weapons. The 5-day long evolution was a part of Exercise Iron Fist 2012.

The complex and challenging missions assigned to Marine Expeditionary Units require serious planning from its staff officers within the unit to ensure operations run smoothly. A staff officer is a military officer who serves on the commander's staff, working in a particular field and is responsible to the unit commander for tasks that fall under their specialty. For example, all questions involving logistics would fall under the logistics officer's area of responsibility.
