The San Diego Council Navy League of the United States honored a spouse from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force, with the 2011 Sea Services Marine Spouse of the Year Award during a ceremony at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina, Dec. 8.

 ‘Fighting 13th’ returns home
On Sept. 28 and 29, more than 2,300 Marines and sailors from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit launched helicopters, amphibious assault vehicles, Landing Craft Air Cushioned and Landing Craft Utilities to deliver them for one last amphibious landing - their homecoming at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

In the fading daylight, Marines and sailors of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Green Bay, stare out onto a jungle island. Sixty-nine years ago they would have beheld a different sight; bombers strafing fixed positions, naval warships sinking one another and the flashes of machine guns firing between the trees.
