Florida employers recognized for their support to Guardsmen By 1st Lt. Allison Givens and Staff Sgt. Carmen Gibson ORLANDO, Fla. (July 23, 2011) – At their Annual Planning Awards Conference, the Florida Committee for the Employer and Support of the Guard and Reserve honored civilian employers and volunteers dedicated to finding and maintaining civilian employment for members of the National Guard and Reserve.

Two weeks ago, 99 soldiers from the 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team set out on a journey many infantrymen take and few complete with success. For the first time in more than 20 years, the Florida National Guard conducted testing for the Expert Infantryman Badge, a coveted award and symbol of tradition for U.S. soldiers who accept the difficult and sometimes thankless job of infantrymen.

It’s been almost two years since the Florida National Guard’s 806th Military Police Company was designated as an internment resettlement company. This year at annual training, the Fort Pierce-based unit is putting all of their individual training tasks together for a culminating exercise at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center.

Everyone plugged their ears and waited anxiously as a loud boom shook the beach. The explosion launched a rusty medal drum into the air and when it landed, a sigh of relief came from the onlookers. They cheered with excitement as the wind blew away the black smoke.
