News Stories Soldier creates lupus awareness on deployment On the morning of Dec. 21, about 100 people or so, gathered around to help Joe Lecuyer, 40, from Minneapolis, Minn., raise awareness of lupus and run a 5K together on a cold morning in the desert. What is unique about this awareness run is Lecuyer is deployed with his Guard unit to Kuwait. 02.5.2012 Story by Capt. Sara Behr
World Cancer Awareness Day 5K Twice each week I talk to my parents over Skype. They thought it was incredible that they could still see me even though I was thousands of miles away, for last deployment we relied on phone calls and e-mails to keep in touch. Even though we didn’t necessarily talk long or some days we only made small talk about the weather, it was something we all looked forward to, to see each other. It is always hard to hear tough news when you can’t be there to help or comfort a loved one, but when you can see them makes things a bit easier. 02.5.2012 Courtesy Story
Bone marrow donation Feb. 4, 2012 is World Cancer Day and soldiers of the 134 Brigade Support Battalion from the Minnesota Army National Guard, deployed to Kuwait, helped to support awareness for this day through volunteering their time to register others as bone marrow donors, some even became donors themselves. 02.4.2012 Courtesy Story
Combating unemployment It’s no secret the veteran unemployment rates is higher than the national average. The unemployment rate of the 134 Brigade Support Battalion is near 30 percent. The issue is not the soldier themselves. Often a soldier is not called back for a job he or she applied for because their resume did not translate. 02.5.2012 Story by Capt. Sara Behr
Minnesota Polar Bear Plunge in Kuwait This year is the 15th anniversary of the Minnesota Polar Bear Plunge. The plunge is held by the Minnesota Law Enforcement to benefit Special Olympics. The interested participants must raise a minimum of $75 and take a ‘plunge’ into one of designated spots on one of Minnesota’s frozen lakes. In the last seven years, the plunge has increased from five to 16 plunge sites all over the state, to include Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. 02.4.2012 Story by Staff Sgt. Lynette Hoke
The Mark of an Infantryman Those who chose to enter the ranks of the citizen-soldier infantry are a breed a part from the rest. Often times volunteering to serve in the most dangerous and demanding ways for the needs of the U.S. Army. It’s these soldiers’ military occupational specialty that has become increasingly important to the U.S. in a world where small-scale acts of terrorism and unconventional warfare are the order of today’s battlefield, but what sets an infantryman apart from his peers? 01.27.2012 Courtesy Story
Canadian service members Receive Awards from MNARNG Unit Back in September of 2011, a Canadian armed forces unit—SLOC DET Kuwait—began full operations at Camp Patriot. The 1st Bn, 125th FA was responsible for the life support of the roughly 100 new tenants here at Camp Patriot. The support included providing living space, setting up office trailers, and coordinating regular cleaning of the trailers. 01.12.2012 Story by 1st Lt. Sean Carstensen
Kuwaiti & American friendship develops over a game of soccer The fans were vibrantly reacting to every move on the gridiron. When the whistle blew sounding the end of the game, both squads knew it would be too late. Knowing victory was the only way to end competition, focus needed to remain on one thing and one thing only. Veering the circular pigskin into the net would put the superior force on display, if only for a moment. This is the kind of tenacity Kuwaiti, U.S. Army, and U.S. Air Force players brought to the engagement. We use the term "gridiron," for this was no ordinary soccer (a.k.a. “football”) game. 01.25.2012 Courtesy Story
Transfer of Authority from 7th Dive Detachment to 569th Dive Detachment While the Army is synonymous with conducting most of their operations on the ground, there are a select group of soldiers that spend their deployment under water. 01.27.2012 Story by Spc. Bob Brown
Building a self-sustaining engineer force As the 2014 drawdown of U.S. troops in Afghanistan approaches, the role of U.S. and coalition forces is moving towards helping the Afghan troops defend their country. It’s because of the evolving mission that three soldiers from the 980th Engineer Battalion, an Army Reserve battalion from Dallas, Texas, were chosen to work alongside the Australian Army to train and mentor Afghan National Army engineer soldiers. 01.24.2012 Story by Sgt. Joseph Koktan
