It’s no secret Yuma is a little more removed than many other American cities, so finding new and exciting activities here can be a challenge. But every once in a while, a new opportunity for a rewarding experience presents itself.

 Single Marines hit snowboarding scene
At 1 a.m., Jan. 29, nine Marines stood around a campfire in the freezing cold. The only light in the sea of black was the warm glow of the flickering, orange flames. Music filled the chill air at the top of an 8,000 foot mountain. The aroma of pepper steak roasting over the fire drifted on the night breeze as the group laughed and talked the hours away. Most of these Marines had met only the day before, but that would be impossible to tell by looking at them.

 A Heart of Bronze: Yuma Pilot earns high military award
Capt. Daniel Fiust, a Marine Attack Squadron 513 AV-8B pilot and a native of San Carlos, Calif., was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his tactical ingenuity while serving as the air officer for 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, in Afghanistan from Jan. 1, 2011, to Sept. 1, 2011.

 Arizona Guard provides veteran insight to Phoenix FD
More than 300 members of the Phoenix Fire Department attended ‘Hometown to Heroes’ culture training, hosted by the Arizona National Guard’s Total Force Team here, Jan. 11 and 12.
The event served to raise awareness about servicemembers and veterans, emphasizing how to handle their unique situations as well as care for them when they are having difficulty coping with what they have experienced.

Arizona recruiter receives national recognition
Staff Sgt. Craig Wester, a team leader within Recruiting and Retention Battalion with the Arizona National Guard, was selected as the Army National Guard’s Top Recruiting and Retention Noncommissioned Officer for 2011, a selection process that screened more than 3,000 recruiting and retention NCOs nationwide.
