The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, established in 1898, provides civil works and military engineering support to Southern California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. The area encompasses 226,000 square miles, 420 miles of coastline, and the highest, lowest, and hottest spots in the contiguous 48 states. Major flood risk management projects include improvements to Prado Dam in Corona, Calif., and to the Santa Ana River, from its headwaters in Highland, Calif., to the Pacific Ocean 75 miles away. The District operates and maintains 16 dams, 14 navigation projects, 13 miles of breakwaters, and 54 miles of flood control channels. The dams and recreation areas host more than 7 million visitors a year. Home to more than 300 endangered animals and plant species, ecosystem restoration projects form a major part of the District's workload. These include riverbed and habitat restoration in the heart of Phoenix and in Los Angeles. Military missions at nine installations include construction of a hospital at Fort Irwin, Calif., and F-35 facilities at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz. The Interagency and International Support program allows the district to do work for other federal agencies by tailoring support capabilities to customer requirements and budget. Major projects include construction of the border fence for DHS and rehabilitation of infrastructure at VA facilities.
