WASHINGTON – The Joint Task Force -- National Capital Region will hold an orientation for personnel who have recently arrived to support the 57th Presidential Inauguration, Nov. 15.

JTF-NCR is providing military support to the 57th Presidential Inauguration and coordinating all military ceremonial support for the Inaugural Period, Jan. 15-24, 2013. As a joint task force, it includes members from all branches of the armed forces of the United States, including the Reserves and National Guard.

The orientation will provide incoming personnel with an overview of the JTF-NCR’s mission and responsibilities throughout the area. After seeing a monthly retirement ceremony performance by the Old Guard ceremonial parade units and “Pershing’s Own” band, service members will tour Joint Base Myer – Henderson Hall, visit the Caisson Stables and watch the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery’s Tomb of The Unknown Soldier. Furthermore, the JTF-NCR’s newest members will also get a historical perspective on their new surroundings from the JBM-HH command historian.

Military involvement in the Presidential Inauguration dates back to April 30, 1789, when members of the U.S. Army, local militia units and revolutionary war veterans escorted George Washington to his first inauguration ceremony. Military support to the Inauguration honors the commander in chief, recognizes civilian control of the military and celebrates democracy.
