FORT STEWART, Ga.— Soldiers from the 3rd Sustainment Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, along with family members and friends conducted a memorial motorcycle ride in honor of Sgt. Alvin Phillips. Phillips, who was assigned to the 233rd Transportation Company, 87th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, passed away after he was involved in a motorcycle accident, Aug. 24.
“This was a respect ride to honor Sgt. Phillips' life,” said Sgt. Ryan Haynes, a motorcycle mentor with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Brigade.
Haynes, who knew Phillips through motorcycle clubs, said that this was also a brother hood ride.
“It’s just unfortunate that we had to do it for this particular reason,” Haynes said.
The memorial ride started near the 3rd Sustainment Brigade headquarters on Fort Stewart. The more than 50 supporters then rode together to the installation’s Main Post Chapel where Phillips’ memorial service was held.
“This ride was a way to represent Sgt. Phillips’ love for two wheels,” said Staff Sgt. Jay Wichlacz, a fellow soldier and friend also assigned to the 87th CSSB.
“I know that if Sgt. Phillips was here today, he would’ve wanted to be in front and lead the way.”
