BUFFALO, N.Y. - More than 20,000 citizens of Buffalo, N.Y. are touring U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Canadian navy ships as a part of Buffalo Navy Week 2012, Sept. 9 – 17.
The guided-missile frigate USS De Wert, Canadian navy frigate Ville De Quebec, U.S. Navy patrol craft USS Hurricane and U.S. Coast Guard cutter USCGC Katmai Bay (WTGB-101) welcomed guests onboard to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812.
John Lawrence a former Radioman 2nd Class in the U.S. Navy said it was nice to be able come out and see the ships in his hometown.
“This really brings back a lot of memories,” said Lawrence. “They don’t have radioman anymore, but it’s great to see how things have been moving forward since I left. It’s also great to see our current sailors out performing their duties.”
During their tours, guests were invited to see many of the ship spaces including the flight deck, forecastle and pilothouses. Operations Specialist 2nd Class Willie Joseph, assigned to De Wert, said it was a pleasure to have the people of Buffalo aboard.
“The people have all been extremely nice and complimentary,” said Joseph. “It means a lot to have some of these people who have served before us come and thank us for what we do. They are why we are here, and I’m just glad to be able to interact with them and show them the things we are doing.”
The ships are moored at the Gateway Terminal and the Naval and Military Park in Buffalo.
Canadian Sub-Lieutenant Patricia Corbeil said her entire ship was excited to be in the city of Buffalo.
“We love being able to show people what our navy does,” said Corbeil. “It is so exciting to be here because of all the events and the people have been wonderful. We are also excited to see the Buffalo Bills play. This is a great city and we are happy to be here.”
One of 15 signature events around the country, Buffalo Navy Week is an opportunity for area citizens to see their maritime services up close, and for sailors and Coast guardsmen to contribute to the community. The observance of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 is a salute to all sailors and Marines who fought gallantly in that conflict, who served in all our nation’s conflicts since then, and who are defending freedom around the world.
