1001st QM (FS) change of command

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Capt. Herbert J. Reid III assumed command of the 1001st Quartermaster Company (Fuel Support) from the outgoing acting commander 1st Sgt. Jack Nelson during a change-of-command ceremony at the Skaggs Reserve Center in Chillicothe, Ohio, Saturday, Aug. 18.

Lt. Col. John C. Smalls, 633rd Quartermaster (QM) Battalion commander, hosted the ceremony. Family and friends came in support of the new commander.

“Command is always a privilege, and command of the 1001st Company was an honor,” said Nelson, native of Richmond, Miss., who became the acting commander for the 1001st QM a little more than eight months ago.

“I would ask that you do me one final favor as I return to the first sergeant position,” said Nelson. “Provide Captain Reid with the same level of professionalism, camaraderie and support that you did for me.”

After Nelson addressed the troops the new commander stepped up to the podium to deliver his oration.

“It’s a great day to be alive and a great day to be a soldier!” was Reid opening statement to his troops.

Reid, native of Kansas City, Kan., spoke of leadership, learning and legacy.

As the ceremony came to a close, Reid saluted Smalls as he officially took charge of the 1001st QM.

“Take charge of your company and lead them to success,” said Smalls, as he returned Reid’s salute.

In honor of this special day, Reid’s wife, Tasha, also a captain, sang the national anthem.

Reid was previously assigned to the Supply and Service Officer for the 4th Sustainment Command Expeditionary in San Antonio, Texas. He received his bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University.
