BAQUBAH, Iraq – Within the past two weeks, Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army, have been focused on maintaining a strong presence in Baqubah, Iraq, interacting with the local population and conducting continuous, intelligence-based operations to rid the area of terrorist activity.
The IA soldiers, in partnership with coalition forces, have been focused on areas such as Buhriz, Tahrir, Katoon and Mufrek, targeting cells responsible for murders, kidnappings, placing improvised explosive devices and other terrorist acts.
During a recent four-day operation in Katoon and Buhriz, which began March 2, the Iraqi Army discovered two IEDs, and a weapons cache consisting of several mortar rounds, rockets and anti-tank mines. This discovery was an important step in denying the enemy's capabilities to target the security forces and the innocent people of Diyala.
Aside from operations, the soldiers have focused heavily on their interactions with the local population, building relationships and ensuring the security of the people of Baqubah.
The IA has created a permanent presence in the city, with one unit stationed at the Buhriz IP compound and another stationed at the White Castle IA compound.
"These posts allow the Iraqi Army to maintain a continuous presence in the City of Baqubah, protecting Iraqi citizens while the Iraqi Police continue to recruit and train," said Col. David W. Sutherland, commander of coalition forces in Diyala.
The soldiers have delivered numerous supplies, such as kerosene, rice, toys and school supplies to local families throughout the region, and will continue to assist the local population.
