FORT BLISS, Texas – Lederhosen, bratwurst and hefeweizen! Oh, my! It must be that time of the year again – the ninth annual German Spring Bazaar was held here at the German Community Center, March 17.
The annual event is an opportunity for the military and local community to sample German food and beverages and purchase hand-made crafts to help support two local charities, Aid for the Needy and Helping Hands. Last year the event raised more than $5,000 for the charities.
For Franz Huber, event organizer and civilian employee of the German air force, the bazaar is the perfect chance for people to learn about different cultures in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
“It’s an event where three cultures get together, American, German and Mexican and it’s a way to say 'thank you' to the community for having us here for the past 50 years,” said Huber. “We enjoy it a lot.”
Huber said for many service members who have served in Germany, the event brings back a lot of memories and gives them a chance to enjoy the German beer and food they aren’t able to find off-post. The food was plentiful and offered in a variety of types, ranging from the Fishbrotchen, or fish sandwich, to Easter-themed pastries.
“Over the first two and a half hours, we sold 700 bratwursts already, we expect to sell as many as 1,100. It’s been a good turnout,” said Huber. “Everyone seems to be enjoying the atmosphere, and of course, the weather. In Germany, it’s still winter and here you can sit outside and enjoy a brat in 80-degree weather. It has been a great day.”
Huber said he was pleased to see how diverse and plentiful the turnout was. He recommended people attend the other two German Community Center-sponsored events: the Oktoberfest Celebration and the German Christmas Bazaar.
