MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. — Intermittent rain showers couldn’t stop determined Cherry Point golfers, Saturday, March 3, during the Marine Corps Community Services 4-Club Chili Open Golf Tournament at the Cherry Point Sound of Freedom Golf Course.
There were 10 two-man teams battling it out for the first place prize of two $40 gift cards from the golf course pro shop.
“This tournament tests a golfer’s ability to adapt in many ways,” said Ralph J. Ferree II, the Sound of Freedom golf pro. “The golfers only get to use four of their clubs to compete. This makes them change up their play.”
Ferree added that the weather was a factor in the choices of clubs because the wet conditions made the ball fly differently and forced teams to adjust their strategies.
“It was hard to find a four club combination that would allow me the perfect club for each situation,” said Brady A Lamb, an electronics technician with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 14. “I had to adapt and overcome in this tournament.”
The winning team consisted of Marines from MALS-14. Sean Jahr, an assistance aviation chief with MALS-14, and Jeffrey W. Beaty, an avionics staff non-commissioned officer in charge with MALS-14, finished their 18-hole round with a final tally of 51, which is a 21 under par for the course.
