12th District takes ultimate frisbee tourney

SAN DIEGO - The Commanding General’s Cup Ultimate Frisbee Tournament concluded with 12th Marine Corps Recruiting District fighting their way to the top in a 3-2 victory over Finance Feb. 28.

Eight teams from Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego competed with hopes to win the top prize, but in the end 12th Marine Corps District showed they wanted it more.

“The win was well deserved,” said Gunnery Sgt. Jason Conner, 12th MCD. “We had a good crowd and the tournament went quick.”

The teams are allowed seven players on the field at a time. Each game consists of five minute halves and a five minute halftime with a running clock and no time-outs.

During the tournament, two teams must pass a flying disc to another player in the opposing team’s end zone to score a goal. Teams are allowed to pass the disc as many times as necessary to reach the end zone. Once the disc is caught; however, the player cannot take any steps and can only pivot. The disc changes possession when it hits the ground, is intercepted or goes out of bounds.

“We scrimmaged them before and beat them, so I think we overlooked them,” said Lance Cpl. Taylor Sams, Finance. “They were a good team.”

Finance was off to a good start with the first goal of the game, but 12th MCD stayed on their heels with goal of their own. With just 30 seconds left Finance was able to squeeze in one more to close out the first half on top.

“We found people who could throw,” said Conner. “I said ‘If you throw it I will find it,’ which didn’t always happen, but enough that we pulled off the win.”

In the second half 12th MCD hit the field running, and were able to push two more goals to end the game 3-2.

“We did pretty good but made a lot of mistakes that ultimately cost us the game,” said Sams.

The CG’s Cup is a series of sporting events held throughout the year. The events encourage Marines to put together teams and compete for a common goal. At the end of the year the scores from all the events are tallied and a winner is announced.

“I like playing sports and competing against other units,” said Conner. “You get the opportunity to meet them and get to know the people on base. It builds camaraderie.”

The next CG Cup event will be a Dodgeball Tournament, scheduled to be held at the MCRD tennis courts March 6.
