KABUL, Afghanistan -- General John R. Allen, commander of International Security Assistance Force, has condemned a vehicle borne improvised explosive device attack outside the Police Substation Number 1 in Kandahar district, Kandahar province today which reportedly killed at least nine Afghans civilians while wounding dozens of other civilians and Afghan National Police.

“My prayers and deepest sympathies are with the families and loved ones of those innocent civilians and Afghan police heroes killed and injured in today’s despicable attack in Kandahar,” said Allen. “The insurgents’ practice of continuously killing and maiming their own countrymen is a bankrupt strategy that the people of Afghanistan will continue to reject without end.”

“Mullah Omar seems unable or unwilling to restrain the Taliban reflex to victimize the Afghan people; otherwise he would enforce his own alleged ‘orders’ to reduce civilian casualties,” said Allen. “If not for the bravery and professionalism of the Afghan National Security Forces themselves, the insurgents would be causing more destruction.”

ISAF continues its work alongside Afghan National Security Forces to halt acts of terror and build an increased security environment to promote peace in Afghanistan.
