Sustainers make mark on history

By: Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph Allen

JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq - As the U. S. military transitions out of Iraq effectively ending eight years of war, the citizen-soldiers of the 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, under the tremendous leadership of Brig. Gen. Don S. Cornett, Jr. and Command Sgt. Maj. Debbie L. Schroder, have proven themselves to be critical to the mission at hand.

As we leave Iraq with a planned, purposeful and calculated methodology to getting all of the equipment put in its proper place, whether that is on a boat back home, going to Afghanistan, or staying here in theater for the Department of State or government of Iraq to use, the soldiers of the 310th ESC have established and executed superior combat service support in support of Operation New Dawn. I am tremendously proud of what these young men and women of the 310th ESC have accomplished in such a short amount of time.

We came to this country planning to establish an enduring, strategic partnership with a sovereign, stable, and self-reliant Iraq that contributes to the peace and security of the region. We have done that by liberating Iraq from the rule of Saddam Hussein, building credible, professional Iraqi security forces, contributing to the development of Iraq’s civil capacity, setting conditions for free and fair elections, drastically improving security, and improving relationships between Iraq and its neighboring countries. The great Americans of the 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command answered America’s 9-1-1 call and have made their mark on the legacy of the U.S. military in Iraq.

Iraq has been given an opportunity for a sovereign and stable future. The opportunity has come at great cost and sacrifice, both by the people of Iraq and all who have served here to include the men and women of the 310th ESC. Through that sacrifice, a door once locked has been opened for the Iraqi people to step through and join the free, self-reliant communities of the world. The Soldiers of the 310th ESC leave Iraq knowing they were part of this great effort.

The American public knows what kind of sacrifices members of our military make to keep them safe from harm and terrorism, but sometimes we forget the sacrifices of their families. I want to personally thank each and every family member of the great patriots of the 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. Your sacrifice and your unwavering support to your service members have made it possible for them to answer their Nation’s call. You are America’s true heroes.

I am honored to have worked with such an amazing team of service members.

Sustainers, I am proud of each and every one of you. I thank you for your dedication and professionalism and your perseverance in accomplishing the mission.
