CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Single Marines and sailors from Camp Johnson and Courthouse Bay aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune got a closer look at the base commissary and its advantages, Sept. 19, as part of the Single Marine Programs Commissary Awareness campaign.
“[Commissary Awareness] shows Marines and sailors what the commissary has to offer and how much cheaper it is to shop here,” said Susan Goodrich, Single Marine Program branch head, Marine Corps Community Services.
Commissaries sell their products at cost because, unlike other stores, they do not have to make a profit.
“Base commissaries are the number one military benefit Marines [and sailors] receive and many of them don’t even use it,” said Michael Dunn, the base commissary store director.
He told Marines that, on average, they can save more than $1,500 off what they would normally spend at a convenience store or a civilian grocery store every year.
Marines toured the major commissary departments, such as produce, meats and deli. Dunn explained what Marines can expect while shopping at the commissary, including higher-quality meats, fruits and vegetables.
The deli offers cold cuts by the pound or slice and cheeses. It also has affordable made to order sandwiches, daily soup specials and sushi. Customers may also pre-order meat and cheese party trays with 24-hours notice.
The bakery offers cakes, cookies and pastries.
Marines were impressed with what they saw.
“It seems like a great way to save money,” said Pfc. William Jackson, a student at the Marine Corps Engineer Center. “I’ll most likely come here more often, instead of spending more money off base.”
After their tour, the Marines were quizzed on some basic commissary knowledge and taken outside for a few competitive activities and a chance to win a free commissary gift card.
The activities included tricycle races, bowling with a head of cabbage and an apple eating contest.
